What Qualifications are needed?

If you are an HETAS Registered Chimney SWEEP your sweep number will be required (not installers) and you will have to go through the APICS Application process. (See Assessments).

Sweeps who are not HETAS registered will need to have an HETAS Solid Fuel Awareness Course Certificate number.

A sweep can only become an HETAS approved sweep after you have become an APICS member.

Any applicant applying for membership must demonstrate their competence as a chimney sweep.

Attitude is very important and will be considered in assessment.

All applicants will have attended the HETAS Awareness Course, and meet the Assessors requirements for this course, and then meet the requirements of APICS Assessing Procedure.

It is encouraged you become a HETAS Registered Sweep after assessment; however, it is not compulsory.

Assessment

Applicants applying for assessment will be required to complete an application form, and produce a current CV with two references. They will also need to provide evidence that they hold valid public liability insurance. Proof of Passing the HETAS Awareness Course will also be required.

Each assessment will be conducted by three committee members, one of whom will carry out the assessment, and two who will interview the applicant.

ASSESSING will be carried out in the applicant's area and the applicant will be expected to demonstrate their expertise on at least four different types of flue/appliance. The Applicant's van to be inspected to ensure that it complies with APICS Equipment List (To Follow). The Assessing will be done on a tick box style to ensure fairness to all candidates. They will be vetted by two Committee Members whenever possible at a meeting. This again involves a tick box style with a question and answer session. The completed application form, and any other paperwork, will then be assessed at a management meeting, and a decision made concerning the suitability of the applicant.

Any member who lives in close proximity (30 miles radius) to the applicant will not be involved in the assessment, interview.

If an applicant failed the assessment process twice, their application to join APICS would be rejected. The committee members involved in the first assessment would not officiate at the second assessment.

NACS or Guild Members (current or otherwise) who wish to join and have been assessed by them and hold the required HETAS registration will need to go through the same application process as new sweeps, and may be required to complete part or all of the assessment procedures. This will be at the discretion of APICS and an assessment fee of £130.00 will be charged accordingly.

An ID, with photograph, will be issued after completion of the above assessment.

APICS reserves the right to reassess any member at any time and the member will be charged at APICS discretion)
