The story of APICS

APICS (Association of Professional Independent Chimney Sweeps) was formed in 2002 with the aim of providing a democratic association which listens to members but which also allows them to remain independent. To ensure that members were the very best, we set rigorous standards both for sweeping and customer service. Our goal was, and still is, to be a friendly organisation, supporting good standards of sweeping and helping sweeps to be the best they can be.

Offering members training and continuous support, but allowing sweeps independence to trade and work without interference, the association has grown to a large body of loyal, professional sweeps nationwide.

For many years the association was chaired by Ryan Metters, whose personal heritage in sweeping underpins the work of the association.

Today the association is chaired by Peter Harris who was Managing Director of the Wilkins Chimney Sweep franchise, with over twenty years of experience.

The structure includes a steering committee whose role it is to review standards and association protocol. Steering committee members are volunteers, elected by members. Their position means that they also assess new members and, in the event of any customer concerns, will re-assess and review membership accordingly.
